About Bathroom Sinks
Bathroom sinks can be as eleborate as a work of art, or as plain as a white porcelain fixture. Once a victim of the hideous colors of the 1960's, bathroom sinks have come a long way in design. Choosing a bathroom sink can be as easy or as complicated as you allow it to be. Before purchasing, know what design you want, as well as how the sink will be used. FunctionSimply put, a bathroom sink is a vessel in which to hold water and drain the water properly when needed. Bathroom sinks are used to wash hands and wash hair when not taking a shower. They are occassionally used as a basin for clothing that needs to be hand washed.
Types
A console table sink is one that is supported by four legs, resembling a table more than a cabinet . Vanity sinks are the most commonly used bathroom sink. They allow storage space under the cabinet , as well as the countertop surrounding the sink.
Pedestal sinks are often installed in half baths, where storage is not a necessity, but space saving is. Pedestal sinks are supported by pedestal legs. Wall-mounted sinks are commonly used in public facilities. They are attached to the wall, with the plumbing hidden inside of the wall, often leaving no exposed pipes in the bathroom facility. Above-counter sinks are created to sit on the countertop. Although harder to keep clean in the areas surrounding the base of the sink, above-counter sinks can be designed as the focal point of the bathroom.
Features
Bathroom sinks can be purchased to feature an overflow outlet. An overflow outlet is a small hole near the rim of the bowl to allow water to drain instead of overflowing on the floor. Bathroom sinks can also be purchaed with a single handle faucet that allows for water temperture control by manuevering it from side to side. Another option is that of a two-handle faucet which allows one side to control hot water and the other side to control cold.
Size
Bathroom sinks should be kept shallow. Keep in mind the activities that you will do at the bathroom sink. If you wash your hair or shave in the sink instead of the shower, then it would be beneficial to have a sink that does not have elevated sides.
Considerations
Consider the width of your countertop as well as the depth of the space underneath. If you have a long bathroom countertop, consider installing two sinks
